Something of a gender wars veteran myself- I have the scars to prove it but more of that later, I do in fact eschew conventional weaponry and have a rather queer heart. So, praise where praise is due. I congratulate my heterosexual parents. Were it not for my late father’s predilection to engaging in physical intercourse with my late mother [post second world war] I would not be here, as irritatingly queer and obnoxiously honest as I know I am. I have never been under any ghetto inspired illusion that the GLBT community does not need the straights to celebrate their heterosexuality by breeding. I say- breed on massively up the duff. Happily for me, they breed a pretty constant percentage of queers. Three cheers for them.

In 2002, arch-conservative Matthew Scully wrote a book called, Dominion: The Power of Man, The Suffering of Animals, and The Call to Mercy, that was universally and uncritically acclaimed by the animal advocacy movement. Because this movement is overwhelmingly single-issue in its focus, and in most cases doesn’t care about a person’s views or politics except how they relate to animals, no one had a problem with the fact that Scully was a senior speechwriter for President George W. Bush. He wrote some of the key fear-peddling diatribes that got Bush elected and he was recently re-enlisted to help Bush sell the Iraq war “surge” to the American people.

Can one be an activist and be himself? To most activists, it’s a probably a silly question. They live and breath activism, it’s their passion in life, they do what they have to do and enjoy doing it. Boston University—with the help of the city of Boston, has named a street after former BU president John R. Silber called “John Silber Way”. Apparently it was done with the public blessing of the city’s mayor Thomas Menino. Some people may be pleased by this development, some may be amused, some may be disgusted.

What happens to this buried, unexpressed grief? In many cases it turns to anger, and ultimately to rage. Some of the angriest kids that are encountered in clinical practice are children whose grief was buried long ago in the inner recesses of their psyche. When the losses are compounded and buried so deep that the child can no longer acknowledge the sorrow, the result can be dehumanization of the losses. At this point the child can evolve into what is considered the ultimate menace or threat to society because the child not only loses his or her capacity to feel anything for his or her own losses, but can no longer feel for the pain of others. The child then becomes capable of committing a violent assault or even a homicide without any feeling of remorse whatsoever. - David Crenshaw, Ph.D., ABPP
